Motivation is a discipline.

No really, it is. No one wakes up every morning, ready to go & do all the things every single day. Do you ever find yourself thinking that you have all kinds of great ideas... you can even envision what these great ideas look like in detail... but, they remain as great big ideas? Fact is: Motivation isn’t something that comes natural to anyone. But with a sense of determination & intention, you can make it a habit.

Because we've all been there, & will surely find ourselves there again, here are 12 secrets to stay motivated & achieve your goals.

1.  Improve Your Attitude. Change Your Mindset.

Listen up: life is only as good as your mindset. Therefore the most important thing you can do to stay motivated & achieve your goals is to master your mind.

It is human nature to steer clear of discomfort. We are all hard-wired this way & it has served humankind well, in terms of survival. But we've got this "survival" thing down now... & our adverse relationship with anything uncomfortable does not serve us goal-diggers well.

The difference between people who are motivated and people who are not motivated is that motivated people find a way to reprogram their brain for abundant, positive thinking. Even then, they still feel negative emotion, it’s just that they act anyway.

Achieving goals & turning dreams into reality requires embracing discomfort. You will most definitely experience stress, doubt, fear, anxiety & a slew of other negative emotions, when working to make your big ideas happen. But, you have to take charge of these emotions & use them to fuel your fire.

To get motivated to achieve your goals, you have to intentionally shift your perspective to one where you are positive & believe that you can (& will!) have the success you want in your future.

"I do not fix problems, I fix my thinking. Then the problems fix themselves." - Louise L.Hay

2.  Be Ambitious.

Questions to ask yourself: What is your big idea? What is your dream? What is your goal?

You cannot have motivation without a clearly defined idea-dream-goal. Period. So get clear with what you desire, girlfriend. Crystal clear.

It's always easiest to acknowledge where you want to you & what you want to do, then work backwards to build your strategy to get there. Your strategy is your action plan for getting you what you want. So ask yourself, what do you want?

3.  Know Your "WHY"

Why do you want to do what you want to do? No really... why?

Ask yourself this question & write down the answer. Then ask yourself "Why?" to your answer, & answer again. Ask yourself "WHY?!" 13 times & see where you end up.

It will get uncomfortable. You will get frustrated & discouraged. You will have doubts & fears will arise. This is why you need to know your WHY. Your "why" will be what moves you past the discomfort, the frustration, the doubt & the fears.  The deeper your why & the stronger your connection is to it, the better.

Perhaps your "why" is connected to changing the world, giving to a specific cause, making a change that will have an impact on others. Attaching your "why" to an external motivation of contribution like this will keep the inspiration alive & the motivation easier to stay tapped into.

"Clarify your purpose. What is the WHY behind everything that you do? When we know this in life or design it is very empowering & the path is clear." - Jack Canfield

4.  Believe in Yourself.

If you want to accomplish something new, you have to believe in the possibility of something that hasn’t happened yet. Go ahead, girl. Forge forward. Once in awhile, blow your own damn mind.

You were created to do amazing things. Believe that. You have to believe that you can accomplish whatever it is you want to accomplish—even if you don’t have results yet. Form a deep belief in yourself, your ability to figure it out & succeed, despite not knowing how to do it yet.

"The thing is, you have to believe in yourself. You have to believe in yourself so much that you never settle until you reach your dreams. You have to keep going because you know that you deserve everything & anything you desire. You must stand your ground & keep on grinding because by doing so, you know that you will change the world." - Gabriella Danielle

5.  Focus, Focus, FOCUS.

Easier said than done, if you're a stereotype entrepreneur. (Show of hands: who suffers with ADD?! #squirrel!) However, motivation requires focus. When you focus on something, minimize distractions, & get organized, you can create a specific plan where you can create the new results you want in your life.

If you focus on your goal without being distracted, you will get results. Whatever you focus on grows.

"People think that focus means saying 'yes' to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying 'no' the the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully." - Steve Jobs

6.  Do the Work.

Listen, you can't cheat the grind. You actually have to do the damn thing.

Most people won't do the work. Can you believe that? It's true. So don't be "most people." It’s okay to not want to do the work. In fact, most people who do the work don’t want to do it. They just do it anyways & eventually it becomes so habitual, they like it.

7.  Measure Your Progress & Production.

Measure what you produce instead of the time you spend doing something.

Here's an idea: Make a list of all the tasks that need to get done in order to take the next step. Put each task on a post-it. Get out your whiteboard & a marker. Make three columns: To Do, In Progress, Completed. Move the post-its to the appropriate column, & watch your progress soar. There's something unbelievably satisfying about seeing that "Completed" column full of all the things you've done to move the needle forward.

8. Change Your Environment.

Sometimes it's as simple as sitting yourself down in a new place. Whether you're a work-from-home kind of girl or you find your workplace to be your second home, changing your environment is a "sure-thing" to get motivated, as you intentionally set yourself up to WIN.

So take inventory: what does your desk look like? If it's a complete disaster, maybe it's distracting you from being your most productive. Are you fitting in house chores in-between calls & webinars? What podcasts are you listening to? Podcasts are a great way to keep your motivation up, by introducing you to new ideas, redeeming your time & continuing your personal growth.

9.  Surround Yourself With People Who Push You.

Your health, drive, success, relationships, & money are all affected by the people you’re around the most... so do yourself a massive favor by surrounding yourself with the very best.

In the spirit of number 8 (^), consider working from a new place. Perhaps this is a coffee shop, where you have plenty of caffeine close at hand to help keep you focused & grinding it out. Or try a co-working space. The Dostal House was created to bring together determined women dedicated to living their best lives under one roof. With free wifi, printing, white boards for brain dumps  & a private meeting room, think of The House as being your home(office) away from home. Day Passes to be a HouseGuest are available!

Motivation is contagious.

10.  Keep The Promises You Make to Yourself.

How many times have you told yourself you're going to get up in the morning & hit the gym, to get your day started... only to hit snooze 8 times, finally shutting off the alarm, & promising to do it next week. Girlfriend, stop breaking the promises you are making to yourself!

You wouldn't bail on meetings with others, so why do you do this to yourself? If you don't have enough respect for you to honor your commitments, you are opening yourself up to others taking your time for granted too. Time is a commodity, & if you don't schedule it, it's not important to you.

When you actually follow through with the commitments you make to yourself, you’ll get results. Seeing small wins will give you momentum & help to keep you motivated.

11.  Prep Yourself  for Potential Problems & Obstacles.

Chances are good that problems will pop up & obstacles will arise as you work towards achieving your goals. Actually, chances are better than good... they are guaranteed. You should place a giant bet on them happening, because it would be a safe one. (& a really great way to finance your endeavors! Amiright?!)

But really, there is no place where you arrive without problems. To make sure the problems don’t stop or stall you from achieving your goals, think of what obstacles could come up & get in your way. Make a list of them. Then, plan out how you’ll solve for each problem that comes up. You can refer back to this list when they rear their ugly head, & because of the prep work you've done here, you won't be rattled.

"Identify your problems, but give your power & energy to solutions." - Tony Robbins

12.  Do NOT Self-Sabotage.

What is "self-sabotage?" Self-sabotage is interfering with your own progress to complete your goals. Yeah... you definitely don't want to do that.

Here are common ways we get in our own way:

  • Procrastination. (Don't put off what needs to be done. Refer to #6.)
  • Over-functioning. (Too much to do & not enough time? Refer back to #5.)
  • Quitting. (It's taking too long... it's really freaking hard... Refer back to #1. & #3. & #4.)

You can be your own worst enemy... but you don't have to be. If you find yourself stuck in the rut of self-sabotaging, take a time out. Reflect on what is happening, & ask yourself why you're standing in your own way. Remind yourself of your goals, why they are your goals, & realign yourself with how you are going to get there.
