2019 was arguably the year of the woman.
We rose up. We fought. We supported. We had she-roes and major girl crushes. Megan Rapinoe. Lizzo. Sandra Oh. Christine Blasey Ford. The list goes on and on. But the turn of the calendar to 2020 ushers in a new host of unknowns. It’s an election year. Our world seems more divided than ever. Two steps forward. Five steps back. So, women...what can we do? How do we carry on the momentum of 2019? How do we continue to link arms and weave a strong net of united voices?
Start small. Start local. Supporting fellow females in your community creates ripple effects beyond what you can imagine. Shopping at female-owned businesses. Mentoring female business owners. Focusing on helping each other thrive instead of putting energy into competition. Messaging a female you know with an inspiring note. Sharing resources and knowledge. Emphasizing community.
Diversity. Diversity. Diversity. We want ALL women to be included in the fold. That includes marginalized groups who are facing even more of an uphill battle. Educate yourself about women of color and the LGBT community. Become an ally. Ask how you can support their efforts. Because ladies, we are all in this together.
Abandon fear. It’s terrifying to speak up about your views, what you need, what you deserve. But your actions could spark courage in another woman, creating a firestorm of bravery. So be bold on social media. Share your opinions, even if they’re unpopular. Speak out in meetings, even if you feel like you’re on an island by yourself. Say something when you see injustice being done to another female. You never know who is watching your bold acts.
Care for yourself. You can’t give to others and lift someone else up when your cup isn’t full. Take down time. Banish the idea that free time is selfish. Say yes to what brings you joy. Your vibe is contagious. And when you’re feeling yourself, it will inspire others to do the same.
Be vocal about your support. Shout it from the rooftops, ladies! Who inspires you? Who do you see hustling? Who’s moving and shaking? Tell them that you see them, you hear them, and you support them. Share the love on social media. Leave a review for their business. We are fierce and loud, and we should be fierce and loud with our support for other women.
2019 was the year of the woman. 2020 is the year that we take meaningful action, make even more waves, and shape the future.
