We’ve seen this post floating around social media the past few weeks that says something like,

“If you don’t come out of quarantine with a new skill, product, or hobby, you don’t lack time, you lack discipline.”

Immediately we started to furiously type out a response to this post, utilizing lots of shouty caps. Ultimately we deleted our comment, because nothing good comes from a social media screaming match.

Ladies, it’s plain and simple: You don’t have to do ANYTHING right now. We're going to take you back a moment to Psychology 101 and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. The very bottom of the pyramid, the very foundation of what keeps us alive are psychological needs, AKA air, water, food, shelter, sleep. And then the next level contains our safety needs. We need security in employment, resources, health and property. When these two levels are put into question (as they are right now) our brain can’t begin to even think about the other level of needs. And these levels include things like: creativity, trying new things, stretching our brains, and being productive.

This is all to say that while our brains are on overdrive just trying to survive, we literally can’t tap into any other part of our brain to do much else. This probably explains the lack of motivation, long hours in bed, and the ungodly amount of screen time. But all of this is OK. And don’t let any social media convince you otherwise.

We don’t know how long we will be in this situation. We don’t know what each day will bring. We don’t have a complete sense of security. We are adjusting to a completely new kind of life. And that takes time and energy. The same precious resources that are used to innovate and create and motivate. So, yes, we have to use these in ways that fit what we feel we need. In the current moment, that may mean working on a revamped budget. Or it might mean going down a rabbit hole of shopping for more sweatpants. Neither is wrong, because it’s what you need in the moment.

Let’s settle this once and for all. If you come out of this without a new skill, product, or mindset, you did damn fine! You survived. You listened to your body. You prioritized what you needed, and you ignored the 7395 social media posts telling you to hustle, hustle, hustle. And if you do come out of quarantine with something new, that is amazing too! (#bonuspoints) We’ll be there to rally and support you!
