We tapped Meegan Hofmeister, founder of SignedM.Studio, on the shoulder for this post & asked her to give us the low-down on what in the world email marketing is & why she things we absolutely, most definitely, no doubt about it NEED to be doing it.

Hey Girlies (& Fellas!) Fun fact about me: I am a multi-passionate entrepreneur. In addition to founding The Dostal House, I am the founder & CEO of SignedM.Studio, a social media strategy & content creation agency. It’s a biz that started as a hobby & a side hustle… something I really enjoyed doing for a few friends’ businesses… & then one morning I put on my smarty pants when I got dressed & realized I should be charging for the amount of time I was devoting to helping my favorites grow their businesses. And now here we are, talking about Email Marketing together! So here we go:

Listen up, you smart & beautiful hard-working rockstars: this is a non-negotiable in my book. Because the average person checks their inbox 15 times a day. Email marketing is a cost effective solution that gives you the power to reach your customers in a place you know they will see you.

Think about it: When was the last time you visited a website when you weren’t asked for your email address? It’s the norm, right? There’s good reason for it. Email marketing flat out WORKS, & there’s plenty of data to back it up:

  • 91 percent of American adults like to receive promotional emails from companies they do business with. (MarketingSherpa)
  • Email is almost 40 times more effective than Facebook and Twitter combined in helping your business acquire new customers. (McKinsey)

And if those fun facts aren’t enough to get your wheels turning on your next email campaign, let me reason with you even more.

People Do Business With People They Know, Like & Trust.

Think of your email newsletter as your opportunity to prove that you’re the expert! Build credibility with your audience by sharing with them helpful & informative content. Have concerns about being perceived as the annoyingly high-pressure virtual saleswoman/man? You don’t have to pitch your product or service in every email… in fact, it’s probably better if you don’t. Think of your list of subscribers as your best friends. Talk to them through your emails as if you are having a 1-on-1 conversation. Treat them to information that you think they’d be interested in, in addition to you being the answer to their prayers! People do business with people they know, like & trust.

Strengthen Your Relationships With Your Subscribers.

Fact is, the people that have opted in to receiving your email newsletter have an interest in who you are & what you are doing. Now it’s your job to nurture that relationship. Email gives you the ability to stay top-of-mind & keep people engaged with your business, period. Whether it’s your busy season, & you have gobs to tell them about… or it’s the slow season, & you want to make sure they don’t forget you exist… consistently dropping your subscribers a quality little note is a great way to strengthen your relationship with them.

Drive Traffic To Your Website.

It’s the same reason you should be using social media marketing, too. The goal is to get people on your website to see what the heck it is you do & why they can’t live without you. Give people a little taste of your greatness via your email (don’t give away all the goods!) & direct them to your website for the full story. Whether this be a new blog post, written to showcase your expert skill level in the biz or a new product/service offering you’ve just launched… getting your audience to your website, & keeping tabs on your analytics, is going to show you where your greatest opportunities lie.

Get the Good Word Out, Fast.

Guess what. Rumor has it that when you post on Instagram, less than 10% of your followers see it. Instagram watches your post super ridiculously closely & pays attention to how many people interact with it, especially within the first hour. If it seems that you have lots of engagement, they’ll show it to more of your followers. But, they are also focused on creating a community… so, you need to be plugged in & creating your community. If you don’t respond to comments made on your posts within one hour, Instagram flags you & your post gets shown even less. & guess what else: Facebook owns Instagram. Meaning, you’ve gotta work Facebook pretty hard, too. Who has time for that, right?! (Me. I freaking love all things social media. My biz is literally to do this for you.)

So here’s what I’m getting at: you own your email list. Use it. If you have information that you think your target customer would be interested in… drop it in their inbox. They will see it. (This is where the importance of attention-grabbing subject lines comes in). Sending info to your subscribers directly via an email campaign takes out the middleman & let’s you speak to your audience 1-on-1, getting the good word out to your friends, fast.

Email Marketing Beats Social Media Every Day.

Coming from a Social Media Strategist, this might be a little weird to hear me say… but, I also offer email marketing services (*wink!*) Here’s the deal: you might have 12,000 followers on Facebook, but if Zuckerberg decides to shut it down… how will you talk to them? & with the always-changing algorithms that will forever make it more difficult for you to reach your target customer without first benefiting the platform’s bottom line… frick, how does one keep up & actually use social media to drive business?! Never ever forget that these social media platforms are a business first, & a community second. You’ve already convinced your email newsletter subscribers that you are interesting enough to opt-in. They have already told you that they WANT to hear from you. So talk to them. Directly. & regularly. Your email list will most closely resemble your dream client. Treat them well.

For more information on what the heck I do, or if all of this sounds like it’s going to take way too much time that you don’t already have… look me up: SignedM.Studio. Talking about this stuff is my fav. Let me know if you wanna chat!

Signed,

M.
